Dec. 7th - Dec. 13th

We have been keeping very busy in second grade! Last Friday we sang carols for the St. Paul's Church Ladies Guild while they enjoyed lunch. It was great practice for us for our upcoming program next Wednesday. It's something the second graders enjoy doing every year.

In Science, we have started our landform projects. Using a paper plate and different colored clay and using our knowledge of landforms we are creating five different types to display in our classroom.

Last Friday we had a special treat of DEAR 2013 and got to read with 1-5th grade for 2,013 seconds--or 33 minutes. It was fun to do this with all of Lower school and see everyone get into DEAR time, even the teachers! We finished with a special treat of hot chocolate and sugar cookies!

We made 3D Peppermints and acrostic poems for our group activity.

As you know, our own second grader Atem has been collecting pencils for children in Sudan for a few months now and Wednesday we had the final count of how many pencils he collected, along with an extra special, extra generous, donation of 10,000 pencils from US Toy! Taking Atem's total to over 24,000, exceeding his goal of collecting 20,000 pencils. Thanks again to all of the families, students, and teachers at St. Paul's for their donations, along with the Long Family and US Toy. You can watch the youtube video of the presentation HERE

Nov. 30 - Dec 6

Happy Holidays from Second Grade!

Trees have been trimmed, lights have been hung, halls have been decked and carols and jingle bells can be heard throughout St. Pauls!

We started our week with a mini unit we will be doing with Miss Hamlin on Mondays called Christmas Around the World.
Each Monday afternoon we will travel to three different countries to learn about their culture and Christmas/Holiday traditions.
This week we started in America and traveled to Mexico and Brazil. We are keeping a "scrapbook" of what we learned and writing about our favorite part in our passport.

In Mexico they celebrate for eight days leading up to Christmas Eve. On the first night the families have Pinata Parties. On Christmas Eve all the children of the village would walk with gifts to the Nativity scene at the church. After Midnight Mass there would be a great firework show!

In Brazil, Papai Noel travels from Greenland to bring presents to the children. Because Brazil is currently in the summer season, Papai Noel must change out of his heavy coat and into silk robes. During Christmas Day you might enjoy spending a day at the beach with family and a picnic.

In Math we have started addition with regrouping. We always remember to start on the right side and if the sum is over nine we must REGROUP! We learned a trading and regrouping game called "3 Town Trade"

Science has begun working on the three forms of Matter: Gas, Solid, and Liquid. We learned that MATTER--MATTERS!

Here are a few of the Christmas projects we have done in class this week:

We are looking forward to the coming weeks with more holiday projects, group activities, special Chapels, our party, and our Christmas program.

Nov. 19-29

Catching up on our news from before Thanksgiving, the second grade classroom has a lot to be thankful for!
We hope everyone had a restful and stuffed Thanksgiving break and we are heading full swing into the holiday season!

In math we will soon begin addition with regrouping. This week we focused on reviewing our two and three digit addition skills and played a number line game adding and subtracting from 0-100.

We made Thankful Hands and symmetry turkeys.

In science and social studies we are finishing up food webs/chains and continuing to learn about different types of landforms.

Our Author Study unit has begun, now until Christmas break the classes will be studying different authors like Peggy Parrish (Amelia Bedelia}, Robert Munsch (Thomas's Snow Suit), David Adler (Cam Jansen), just to name a few....we are looking forward to all we will learn about these great authors and more!
