March 8 - 14

With gorgeous weather like today, we are feeling confident that the snow days are behind us and spring is on the horizon!

The students are really enjoying their Asia unit and are learning lots of facts about the different countries found in Asia.

In Miss Stark's class, they are working hard on their Chinese Lap Books and starting their research on the Panda. They also learned great facts about the Great Wall of China, did you know:

  • The Great Wall of China is the longest man-made structure on Earth
  • Great Wall of China
  • The Great Wall has been compared to a dragon. In China, the dragon is a symbol of protection.
  • The Chinese invented the Wheelbarrow and it was used extensively in building the Great Wall
In Mrs. Gouttierre's class, they are learning about the cultures and customs of Israel and learned facts on the Dead Sea, did you know:

  • The Dead Sea isn't actually a sea at all but a saltwater lake!
  • You can lay on the surface of the Dead Sea without even trying to float, the high salt content makes you buoyant.
  • The Dead Sea is 3 Million years old!
In Miss Hamlin's class, we have started studying India. On the Monday theme lesson they learned about Mehndi (Henna Tattoo) that is used in Indian celebrations, like a wedding. We learned that the paste is made from the Henna plant and it is crushed up and applied using a cone, much like we would use to frost a cake. Mainly it is applied to woman, on their hands and feet.
Did you know:

  • The new bride is not allowed to do any housework until her Mehndi tattoo wears off, it supposed to be her time to get to know her new husband and his family
  • It can take up to 7 hours to apply the Mehndi to the arms and feet
  • It lasts 1-3 weeks

Today, we began learning some facts about India.

Second Grade's good friend, Mrs. Sachi, came to teach us about Japan. She is from Tokyo and taught us about the country, what is eaten there, what life is like, and a short Japanese fable. She came for a second time this week to start teaching the girls their Fan Dance for the International Festival.

Have a wonderful, safe, and relaxing spring break! Praying for safe travels for all and safe returns back to school. There will be no homework packet or spelling words given on spring break! Use this time to relax and rejuvenate and head into the last two months of second grade.
